Kaiserin was a Tripawd who loved to paint and had a real talent for it. She was a trick dog champion who got her championship by competing all the requirements on 3 legs. Kaiserin’s legacy is the inspiration for the 2021 Tripawds Painting Dog Art Auction.
Kaiserin was a long coat german shepherd who lost her leg to cancer in 2018. As her mom, I was devastated at the time. I honestly thought her life was over. That she wouldn’t be able to do anything anymore but just sit around, maybe go for some car rides. And this was tough to imagine as she was a dog with an active life who travelled with us and did agility and scentwork. But there was no way I could say goodbye to her either so we had to try to fight.
Well, I was wrong. She thrived on 3 legs. Sometimes she fell down but she always got back up and gave everything a try. She was a true fighter. I was shocked. I became determined to show the world what 3-legged dogs could accomplish. In the summer of 2019, she got her Championship Trick Dog title (the highest title available at that time). All her tricks were performed on 3 legs. One of them was painting.
I gave away a few of her paintings as gifts and people said they thought I should sell them. In January, 2020, we opened her Etsy shop with the idea to raise some money for the Tripawds Foundation and help other 3-legged dogs and cats. I expected to maybe raise a couple of hundred dollars in the year.
Unfortunately the cancer spread to her lungs and she passed in October 2020 and didn’t quite make it through the fundraising year. Her brother Schultz took over the painting and fundraising project and and by the end of the year, we were able to donate $2,200 to the Tripawds Foundation. This year, the Kaiserin Cancer Care package program was set up in her memory, helping send care packages full of useful and fun products to tripawd dogs and cats battling cancer. She is also the inspiration for this dog art auction project.
Her auction piece is called “Pumpkin Spice Latte” and it is one of the final pieces of art she worked on. It was october and we were just planning a line of fall themed paintings. She passed suddenly, just a couple of days after completing this piece so it was never put up for sale.
